NINJA ASSASSIN: TWO CENTS WORTH

Saw the movie the other night with fellow creators Brandon Peterson and Frank Cho and all three of us agreed that even though it had some cool bloodthirsty effects and action scenes, the movie itself left us a bit dissapointed. The story itself, we have seen a few times and done much better by others . The very obvious bookended screenplay failed to really build up any actual tension or threat . One particular scene stood out to me as lazy storytelling : our main character finishes off his first kill [ see la femme nikita to see how its done right] and almost dies doing it...and the very next scene the entire clan and the big boss are on a rooftop of the very same building [ huh? ] asking him to cold bloodily murder a random woman...and then when he refuses, he takes on the whole clan. These scenes back to back show the lazy way the story just put into motion certain random events to push the story forward. honestly, they needed him to fall off the roof...and thats the only reason the scene happened there at that location. I can imagine the leader of the ninjas taking all his men into the building and taking the elevator up to the 60th floor with a woman tied up and waiting there for their guy to finish his job and come up so they can once again show him that ...well...I am not sure what. That kind of stringing together of scenes really makes me sigh out loud in the theatre.

Yes, i know to expect every cliche in the book when I go see something like this, but I am that guy that keeps thinking film makers will make the material rise a bit. somewhere, deep down, the film makers thought showing a head or arms cut in half was all they needed here. their mistake and my mistake for seeing this. I have to believe there was more to this screenplay in its original form with the names involved.

NEGATIVE: below average screenplay, cliche interaction, cardboard cut out characters, no sense of urgency and a climax we saw coming a mile away. Rated R for violence only, not nudity,

POSITIVE: cool effects...some well done flashbacks, and no one made noise in the theatre

JONAH HEX THANKSGIVING.

I would personally like to give thanks to D.C. comics for letting us continue with writing JONAH HEX for this long...like to give thanks for JOSH BROLIN who has proved to us he "is" Jonah Hex and one of the coolest guys I met...give thanks to the cast and crew of hex, a shout out to Megan, and especially Jimmy Hayward and my buddy Andy Lazar for being so generous with Justin and I on and off set, and especially would like to thank all the artists that have helped us... and made Justin and I shine each and every month on this book for the past 4 years. Here is some hex love for you all to enjoy and especially the latest image released featuring Josh being a bad ass. Have a great holiday folks.

SOUTH DAKOTA

SO...i have the google analytics breakdown of where the hits on this page come from. Everywhere from asia, russia, south america, new zealand and so on have many hits. when I looked closer, i noticed that every single state in the united states has hit this site at one time or another...every single state, except SOUTH DAKOTA. what does that tell me? Well...a couple of things.

FIRST: there must not be very many comic collectors or fans there.

SECOND: maybe its mostly a gay male population...I mean, there are enough photos of women on my blog to hook up Rhode island .

THIRD: I have never visited that state for a signing or a convention...so maybe they are all mad at me?

well, in any case i thought it was weird...so I may have to investigate this one day.

any opinions?

oh, and you see the ads on the page...well..i think I get a penny if you click them. imagine that...

ONE PAGE OF POWERGIRL #7

There will be previews, lettered ones, around the web in a week or two , so Last thing I want to do is ruin that for the hardworking p.r. crew at DC...so here is one colored page in the middle of the issue that you can "ohhhh" and "ahhh" at. Sorry, thats all I can show for now.
I picked a page that reflects the actual cover story so nothing is ruined on any level. Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts knock it out of the park once again. This is one of the most fun titles I have ever worked on...on so many levels...and yes everyone, i read the explanation of Powergirl's suit that was in an annual, and I would like to point out that Powergirl herself is not saying it is why, its the other character taking a stab at it...anyway, I included it above as well. and yes...the holes and not washing them statement...she says that much and thats about it.

This is actually a photo of me with a bunch of good friends from he year below me. I ripped it off from my friend Terri's face book page...thus the banner across me. Terri is in the yellow shirt all the way to the right on bottom, my friend john to the left of me and my friend Patti the beautiful blonde in the red shirt. man, my neck sure was long. It may suck getting old, but at least I can dress better.

I love the concept of face book...and honestly, for a guy like me it is a good tool to get some attention to the lesser known projects i work on and as well connect with the fans and get their feedback. Also, its cool to post reviews and related news...but limiting it to 5,000 is just plain silly. I wish kristin dunst was here to help me and give my facebook account some attention.

PAINKILLER JANE: EMMANUELLE VAGIER

The first thing we did with PAINKILLER JANE outside comics was the 2 hour painkiller jane movie for the sci-fi network. It wasn't bad, wasn't great, and was never put on dvd, which baffles me . anyway, it was a fun set visit in vancouver and I got to hang with Emmanuelle and Tate Donavan and Richard Roundtree. Nothing was cooler than getting to the set and see everyone putting together scenes and shooting in the pouring rain. it was a fun week for me and I came out of it learning a lot about the process. anyway, here are a few shots from then.

WES CRAVEN AND THE BOYS.

Justin and I wrote the prequel to the HILLS HAVE EYES movies and Fox Atomic put it out as a graphic novel which sold over 22,000 copies for just under 20 bucks...which was a huge hit for them. Anyway, at N.Y con, we had a quick breakfast with Mr Craven and he told us how much he loved the book and thought we did an awesome job. yeah...we got paid to do it, but that compliment was worth its weight in gold. Here are a few photos from that morning.
